Enchanted Kingdom Pays it Forward.

I was recently invited to a blogger event in Enchanted Kingdom where I got to experience their thrilling and exciting Magicalympics. It was an exhausting yet amazing day! But that is not what this post is about. You can read more about that in my other blog by clicking the link above.

What struck me with EK’s new line up is how they have managed to incorporate paying it forward with their Celebrity Storyteller program. By inviting some of our local celebrities to host a storytelling session at Eldar’s Tent, 30 children from the celebrities chosen charity are welcomed to the park free of charge! It is nice to know that companies like Enchanted Kingdom try to include our less fortunate children by giving them a fun filled day of excitement. Knowing this makes me feel more encouraged to spend my money in the park!

Flu Fly Away and Other Vaccine Stories.

Being around students (both kids and undergraduates alike) guarantees one thing: constant exposure to coughs, colds and a whole kaboodle of germs. This often leads to my own personal bouts with the flu or other similar illnesses. This is why, much as I hate getting shots, I decided to get myself vaccinated against the flu. While this may not be protection against the dreaded H1N1 virus, I believe that arming myself against the threat of influenza is an important step, especially since I am a teacher. It’s not just for my personal health that I got the shot, but I recognize my role as a potential carrier in spreading illnesses to people around me.

My Classroom Window.

For many preschool teachers, the month of May means getting the classroom ready. Okay, so I’m running a wee bit late myself! I’m still trying to decide on a classroom theme for this year. Last year I went with a garden themed room. Maybe because it was my first year back from a two year hiatus, I went a bit overboard. Here is my classroom window.
arts and crafts glass painting windows

I love painting on glass windows because it gives the transparent, boring glass life. However, because I had no poster paint on hand I had to find an alternative. Then, chancing upon a pile of scrap cut-up colored papers, I decided to used these! I cut the shapes individually then glued them to the window :-) Unfortunately, because the glass is hit by almost direct sunlight daily, the colors of the papers have faded. Nonetheless this window became inspiration for many class projects for the kids. We sure used a lot of recycled paper and scraps for art projects!

For this year, maybe I’ll go with a city theme. Or maybe a zoo. Suggestions?

by the way, I wanna share this glass window with the rest of the readers of Window Views, a weekly meme featuring, yup, you guessed it, windows.

How My Mom Taught Me To Read in Cool Summer Classrooms

Maybe the words “learning” and “summer” do not make the most appealing combination. I’m sure for most students the idea of learning during the summer is the last thing on their minds. However, just because classes are out does not mean learning has to end. Summertime is a great time to explore other interests, talents and skills. Like I always say, learning should not be confined to the four walls of a classroom!

My favorite outside the classroom “classroom” is the beach.

While most parents opt to enrol their kids in sports, creative arts, or even reading/math enhancement programs, my mom used to take me to the beach for summer. We’d stay for extended periods of time, thus not allowing me to have enough time to enrol in whatever program during the break. However, it wasn’t always fun and games while I was at the beach. It was during these vacations that I learned that learning is indeed cool and fun, even in the summer.
